If riding in a taxi, make sure you take written directions along with you and keep your eye on the meter. You don't want to get charged extra for a cab ride that takes the long way (or wrong way) to get to your destination.

6) Check your health insurance coverage - if you get hurt overseas, that's not the time you want to find out that your insurance company won't cover your expenses for hospital care abroad. Check your policy to see if you have travel abroad health insurance. If not, then look into getting it.

7) Check the weather patterns - weather delays can interrupt your plans, so be sure to check ahead of time to see if bad weather is lurking ahead for your trip.

Beaches

Halkidiki has three peninsulas: Cassanra, Sithonia and Mt Athos. Cassandra peninsular is very popular with tourists, with Polichrono being one of the quieter villages. Here there are beautiful white sand beaches and crystal clear waters that you can walk into up to chest depth and still see the sea bed clearly. There are the usual sun loungers available along the beach and only a few water sports as it's more of a sun worshipper's beach than anything else, but it does have ideal facilities with all the bars and restaurants on the sea front. If you're looking for more activities on the beach then perhaps Hanioti Beach would be more suitable for you. Hanioti's beach flies the Blue Flag of purity and it is a wonderful long stretch of white sand and clear waters offering a wide variety of water sports, like boating, snorkelling and jet skiing, amongst others. Along the rest of the peninsular you will come across many more gorgeous beaches, some smaller and quieter than others but still offering good facilities. During the summer periods, the temperatures along the peninsula can reach over 30 degrees, so plenty of sun tan lotion is required as well as water to hydrate your body.

Shopping

There is nothing special about the shopping in any of the villages along the peninsula; they sell the usual tourist souvenirs and gifts. Hanioti does have a wider variety with market stalls that are open until late at night, but again they are mainly tourist items. If you want to do some real shopping then take the coach trip into Thessaloniki, it's a couple of hours away but well worth the journey, as you will find a variety of stores selling everything from electrical items to leather goods and jewellery.

Sightseeing
There isn't a great deal along this particular peninsular but there are many excursions to interesting places. They make take a couple of hours coach drive or perhaps a ferry ride to get to them but they are well worth the journey. Mt Athos is spectacular, its only inhabitants are the Monks and Hermits, there are no women allowed on the land. You can only view it from the sea and the mountains are lined with fabulous looking monasteries that are known to date back to 1453; brilliant for photo opportunities if you have a long lens camera. Petralona near Nea Moudania has some fascinating caves, where bones of fossilised animals that are now extinct have been found and studied to discover they are thousands of years old. The caves also have some magnificent stalactites and stalagmites; unfortunately you cannot take your camera in with you or use a flash. Petralon also has a very good museum that will keep you busy for a few hours. Book the excursions through your travel agent or tour rep or alternatively hire a car as they are reasonably priced and you can tour around independently, giving you time to see the places of interest at your leisure.

The entire range of beaches offer a variety of water sports from those wanting a fun banana boat ride to the more exciting and faster activity of Jet skiing. You will also find there are many small boat cruises available so you can sail out into the warm waters of the Mediterranean for a sun soaked relaxing cruise, and swim. If you're looking for fun on the sea then you could also try an exciting booze cruise. These are usually aimed at the 18-25yr olds so can be rather lively.

Sightseeing

You won't be short of things to do in Antalya. There are many tour excursions available and dozens of street vendors selling them at a very reasonable price. Please check that you are insured if you have decided to participate in any wild or extreme excursions that are on offer. Not too far out of the city is Perge, where you will be able to explore the ancient ruins from the Roman times and take a dip in the Southern baths that were originally built for male use only. These days ladies are able to use them at certain times of the day. After this you can take a guided tour around the marvellous Roman canal system that used to keep the city cool in the summer months. It is an interesting tour and the large Roman gate tower amongst the ruins in Perge is very impressive with great photo opportunities. On the outskirts of Antalya you will also find the impressive ancient theatre called Aspendos. Back in the city of Antalya stands the 13th century Mosque and Minaret. These won't be difficult to spot, as the Yivli Minaret stands 38 metres tall. There is also the old city to take a leisurely walk around and view some more historical sites. This is an interesting part of the city with old Ottoman houses that have been preserved and parts of the ancient city wall can still be seen. Antalya has enough history and sights to keep most tourists occupied while on their holiday with fabulous waterfalls that cascade into the sea, through to museums and lovely parks.

Nightlife

There is no shortage of nightlife in Antalya with the hotels offering a variety of evening shows to suit all the family with live entertainment and traditional dancing. Romantic couples can have a cool drink in one of the many sea front bars. Popular courses include the award winning Aphrodite Hills, Elea Golf Club, Minthis Hills which sits between the orchards and vineyards of a 12th century monastery and the Secret Valley Golf Course which is located near the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite.

Diving

The island is blessed with crystal clear warm waters which are ideal for diving. With sea temperatures ranging from 16C to 27C around the island Cyprus offers the longest diving seasons in the Mediterranean. Popular sites include the Amphitheatre Diving Site, the Three Stars Wreck Diving Site, the Green Bay Diving Site (an ancient ship wreck) and the Akrotiri Reserve Diving Site.

Sailing

Whilst on your cheap package holidays to this amazing island, charter a boat for the day and be spoilt by the ships crew as you sail along the beautiful Cypriot coastline. The island has many secluded bays that only accessible by boat where you can stop off to sunbathe on the beach and enjoy a dip in the crysal blue waters. Hiking in the Troodos Mountains and the Akamas Peninsula is very popular along with the Cyprus Section of the European Walking Route E4. This section takes you from Larnaca Airport to Paphos Airport, passing through Cape Gkreko, up the Troodos Mountains and down to the Akamas region.

Cycling

Cyprus has many cycling routes or the more adventurous can make up their own. Cycling around the island enables you to visit secluded coves, ancient ruins and amazing landscape that you would probably miss if you were travelling by car.

The Cyprus Cycling Federation organises competitions throughout the year, mainly in the spring. These events are suitable for all levels of riders from leisure and fun riders to elite riders.

If you're a wine travel lover, Washington is an especially rewarding destination. Practically everywhere you turn, there's an interesting winery to discover, not to mention vibrant cities, natural wonders galore, and a pleasing four season climate.

In our estimation, many Washington wines are becoming as well known as California's. It's not surprising, as Washington is the second largest wine producing state in the country. To illustrate the importance of Washington's wine industry, over 500 Washington wineries add almost $3 billion to the state's economy, and employ more than 29,000.

There's so much to discover about Washington wine, so let's focus on Washington's eastern area, known as the Inland Empire, and in particular the strikingly beautiful city of Spokane.

Introducing Spokane

One of the first things you'll notice about Spokane is how the great outdoors literally snuggle up to this friendly city. Bisected by the Spokane River, white water rafting, skiing, cycling tours, and hiking opportunities abound. And yet, the vibrant pulse of this high tech city is always on display, with live music and fantastic restaurants just steps away no matter where you turn.

The city itself is wonderfully walkable, interspersed with historic architectural gems that have been restored and reinvented. Our first evenings discovery was the Davenport Arts District, a lively arts and entertainment area.

The Davenport Arts District is really where you'll feel Spokane's pulse. Historic buildings house galleries, restaurants, and unique shops. This is an ideal late afternoon and early evening stroll, with extra time the next day to fully appreciate all the District has to offer.

Just a few of the shops we discovered were Simply Northwest, which features specialty foods, wines, and regional gifts, and the whimsically named Spokandy, a local candy making institution since 1913. Next, it was time for dinner at the Steam Plant Grill, housed in an historic handsome landmark former steam plant.

This was dinner as it should be. Steam Plant Grill focuses on local ingredients, hearty portions, and reasonable prices. Try the planked salmon, beer cheese soup, and the basil cream ravioli. Don't miss dessert ... the vanilla bourbon stout float is made with the onsite brewhouse's oh-so-delicious dark stout beer and creamy premium vanilla ice cream.

Spokane Wineries

Twelve wineries call Spokane and the surrounding area home. Spokane itself is compact enough, so driving distances aren't burdening. Many of the wineries are clustered fairly near downtown, with others just slightly farther afield. Conveniently, 12 of the 14 are quite near the Spokane River, which bisects the Spokane area as it meanders east/west.

Wineries East Of Downtown

Arbor Crest Wine Cellars: Wine Spectator named Arbor Crest one of "50 Great Producers Every Wine Lover Should Know". It's located in the Cliff House, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located high on a bluff overlooking the Spokane River, the view is almost better than the wine here. Look for award winning Cabernets in particular.

Knipprath Cellars: Located in a handsome old red brick schoolhouse, Knipprath boasts an impressive selection of Port wines, a favorite of ours. Have you ever tried a Vanilla Port or a Chocolate Port? You can here! We also loved the Moonstruck Merlot, with its notes of brown spice and plum.

Latah Creek Wine Cellars: If you like Rieslings as we do, you'll enjoy Latah Creek. The extensive gift shop here is one of the nicest we visited on this trip. Also be sure to try a Washington specialty, the Huckleberry d'Latah. This wine is a blend of huckleberries, a small blueberry-like fruit, with Riesling.

Nodland Cellars: What a wonderful small boutique winery this is. Just like many European estate wineries, Nodland produces only one red and one white wine. These wines are aged in French Oak barrels, adding to the smooth complexity of the finished product.

Wineries North Of Downtown

Mountain Dome Winery: Located in the foothills of Mt. Spokane, Mountain Dome is something of a change of pace, as they are Washington's premier sparkling winery. One of the key differences between production of sparkling wines vs. regular wines is the lengthy bottle aging, thereby producing a secondary fermentation. These wines are fun to drink, and add a new dimension to a wine lovers palate.

Townshend Cellar: This small winery north of Spokane offers small lots of quality wines, many of which have been praised by the wine press. The reds are the star here, especially the rich dark fruit taste of their Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wineries In And Near Downtown

Barrister Winery: We literally walked right into this winery, housed in a early 20th century brick building in the heart of the Davenport District. It's red wine heaven here. Barrister produces limited quantities of Bordeaux style reds and Syrahs.

Grande Ronde Cellars: Wine Specator loves Grande Ronde Cellars, having raved about their Cabernet and Merlot. The real star for us, though, was the creamy Chardonnay. The bouquet of apricot and peach truly was the forebearer of great things to come.

Lone Canary Winery: This was our personal winner of "best winery name" in the Spokane area. But Lone Canary is more than just a name, although the logo is eye catching and named after Washington's state bird, the wild canary. The wines here have great depth and complexity, from the deliciously fruity Cabernet Sauvignon to Bird House Red, a red blend.

Robert Karl Cellars: Located in the heart of Spokane's historic warehouse district, Robert Karl Cellars specializes in premium Cabernets. These wines are ideal to cellar for a time to bring out their true mature flavor. In particular, we recommend the rich red Syrah and the Claret.

Vintage Hill Cellars: This downtown Spokane winery is a very comfortable and pleasant place to stop and taste. We bought a few bottles of Vintage Hill's Sauvignon Blanc and the Riesling.

Of course, eastern Washington and Spokane are just a part of Washington's wine scene. In the meantime, don't overlook Spokane! This is an appealing destination whether you crave outdoor activities, historic architecture, city life, or all of the above!

Recreational and Sports Amenities in Coventry

Despite never have being one of the 'hot-beds' of sporting achievement in the country Coventry has much to commend itself in terms of sport and recreation. It has excellent recreation facilities for its residents and visitors, coupled with a determination by the city council to encourage people to use them.

Without doubt the best known sporting organisation in Coventry is Coventry City FC - the football team. With a history dating back to 1883 the club now known as Coventry City was established in 1898, which then moved to the Highfield Road ground it would occupy for the next 106 years in 1899. After many years of struggle they won promotion to the top flight of English football, then called Division One, in 1967. Despite rarely achieving their potential the club did stay in the top flight until the summer of 2001 when they eventually lost their place in the Premier League. Only three other football clubs have managed to stay in the top flight of English football for longer than 34 years. The clubs finest hour came in 1986 when they won the FA Cup, they moved to their new ground - the Rioch Stadium - in 2005 and currently play on the English Championship division. Coventry City FC were known as The Bantams until in the 1960s they adopted a sky blue kit, ever since then they are commonly known as The Sky Blues.

The senior rugby union team in Coventry is simply known as the Coventry Rugby Club who currently play in National Division I of the English Rugby Football Union. Established in 1874 by members of the Stoke Cricket Club, they play at The Butts, which is off the B4101 from junction 7 of the inner ring road. Their best achievement to date was twice winning the RFU Knock-Out Cup Competition in the early 1970s. Coventry has a thriving amateur rugby union scene including clubs like Coventry Saracens who produced the international 'prop' Darren Garforth, who was capped for England 25 times. Coventry also has a Rugby League club - The Coventry Bears - who play at the Old Coventrians RFU ground in Tile Hill. They play in the Midlands Premier League of the Rugby League Conference, which they last won in 2007.

The Coventry Blaze Ice Hockey Team play in the top flight British National Elite League, which they won in the season 2006-2007. The club plays at the Coventry Sky Dome, one of the Planet Ice rinks, on Croft Road in the west of the city centre. Originally formed as the Solihull Barons, then Solihull Blaze, in 1996 they moved to Coventry in 2000 and from then on assumed the name of Coventry Blaze. A fast and physical sport attracts capacity crowds to the Sky Dome arena, home matches are usually played on Sunday evenings from September to March. The local basketball team is the Coventry Crusaders, whose inaugural season was 1992-1993. They also play in the top flight league for their sport, the English Basketball League Division I and play their home games at the Coventry Sports and Leisure Centre, on Fairfax Street.

Coventry Sports and Leisure Centre is one of many such leisure centres across Coventry that are part of the Coventry Sports Trust. The City of Coventry Swimming Club also uses the Olympic size pool at the Coventry Sports and Leisure Centre for it's competitions, including national Speedo League ones. As well as administering the five sports and leisure centres and their activities it also operates the three municipal golf courses.

Coventry has one of the top hockey clubs in the country - The Coventry & North Warwickshire Hockey Club - which is based at Westwood Heath Road near Warwick University. It was established in 1895 and amongst the teams it runs the Men's First XI currently plays in the Midlands Premier League whilst the Women's First XI plays in the Warwickshire Women's Division II. Neighbouring Roscommon has the stunning Curlew Mountains and the vast and breathtaking Lough Key Lake and Forest Park, near the town of Boyle.

By far the most famous area in the region is Connemara, a vast area of outstanding and breathtaking natural beauty that attracts millions of visitors every year. Most of the Connemara area is situated in County Galway but to the north it stretches up to Louisburgh in County Mayo, west of Westport. The capital of Connemara is Clifden, some 80 kilometres west of the city of Galway. This wonderful vibrating town, so full of character, epitomises the laid back mentality of the western Irish people that so endears them to visitors. Here there is no hurry. Over 135 years ago, many German-Swiss immigrants traveled well into the south central United States to stake their claim. And back in the 1870's, the beautiful Ozark Mountain area of northwestern Arkansas seemed an appropriate place to begin. Rolling mountains, while not quite the height or splendor of the Swiss Alps, offered a reminder of home.

And so, a large German-Swiss settlement blossomed in the west/northwest area of Arkansas, "The Natural State". Now, almost a century and a half later, this European influence is still felt in a unique area of the state, roughly between Little Rock in the state's center and Fort Smith, at its' western boundary. Not far off of Interstate I-40, about 50 minutes east of Fort Smith, you'll find Arkansas Wine Country.

Traveling west/northwest out of Little Rock (actually, North Little Rock) on Interstate 40, it's about 140 miles to the heart of Arkansas wine country. As you travel outside of Little Rock, you'll notice the topography changing ... lush valleys and rolling mountains ... a perfect subclimate for grape growing and wine making. Approximately two hours outside of Little Rock on Interstate 40, look for exit 41, Arkansas Route 186. Go south about five miles on 186 and you'll enter the charming and historic town of Altus, heart of Arkansas wine country and home to four area wineries. Let's take a closer look.

Chateau Aux Arc Vineyards and Winery: Directly on Rt. 186, actually just two miles off I-40 and before you reach the town of Altus,is Chateau Aux Arc, the world's largest propagator of Cynthiana grapes. Be sure to check out their gorgeous tasting room, situated on top of St. Mary's mountain. Enjoy the view of the Arkansas River Valley while you taste the fruit of Chateau Aux Arc's labor.

Mount Bethel Winery: Three generations of the Post family have proudly guided this beautiful historic winery. Just 1/4 mile east of the town of Altus, Mount Bethel Winery offers a full selection of reds, whites, and fruit wines. Since Arkansas is a renowned fruit producer, we decided to try the Elderberry and Blackberry wines, both produced from fruit grown and hand picked by the Post family. Both were sweet, tangy, and quite enjoyable. Mount Bethel is also renowned for their port wine, Big Daddy Port.

Post Familie Vineyards and Winery: On to downtown Altus, where one block north on Rt. 186 stands the Post Familie Vineyards and Winery. They say the scenery in this area is just as beautiful as Napa Valley and we wouldn't disagree! Post Familie is known for their muscadine wines (a southern specialty), as well as a very nice Pinot Grigio.

Wiederkehr Wine Cellars: A pioneer in the U.S. wine industry (Wiederkehr is Bonded Winery #8), Wiederkehr Wine Cellars is an introduction to the Swiss winemaking heritage. Housed in an Alpine lodge, Wiederkehr offers 45 minute winery and cellar tours for a behind-the-scenes glimpse into winemaking. We enjoyed a German-Swiss lunch in their onsite restaurant, the Weinkeller Restaurant. As for wine, try Wiederkehr's deliciously dry Johannisberg Riesling or their unique, crisp Verdelet, a white wine made from a French developed grape variety.

Cowie Wine Cellars and Museum: Our last stop takes us to the smallest winery in Arkansas, Cowie Wine Cellars and Museum. Located three miles west of Paris, Arkansas on scenic Rt. 22, Cowie Wine Cellars is a must stop, not just to taste and buy their wines, but also to see their museum, dedicated to the art of Arkansas winemaking and Arkansas wineries.

The Wine Museum traces Arkansas wine history through the last 130 years. Be sure to see the original wine press and other historic winemaking artifacts. Interestingly, this is the only museum in the United States dedicated solely to the wine history of one state. A new branch of the museum was recently opened in Hot Springs, a popular tourist stop further south in the state.
